Enchanting Natural Beauty at El Medano   by Peter Cox

El Medano is renowned as a holiday resort that offers the best sandy beaches for miles around. Its long beaches come with breezy weather and encourage great windsurfing activities throughout the year.

Overview

El Medano may be small but offers lots of fun and life on the beaches and in town. It has turned from a laid-back easy-going resort to one that offers more life and vibrancy through many sport activities.

El Medano has bloomed as a competitive tourist resort in the Tenerife region with on-going development although this little town managed to sustain its pleasant country ambience through well planned development structure.

El Medano is very popular with many locals from Tenerife who own holiday homes in the town.

Attractions

El Medano town has a central plaza which spans off to other interesting parts of the town like the boardwalk that is lined with quaint shops leading to the beach. These shops sell a variety of clothing, health food, water sports and windsurfing paraphernalia. There are shops offering yoga courses to enhance the atmosphere to a bohemian feel.

Beaches

There may be many large beaches for your choosing but it is not advisable to sun bathe there as the strong local winds tend to kick up quite a sandstorm that may not be too comfortable. Hence, the beaches are more popular for windsurfing than sun-bathing.

Hiking

Another worthy activity at El Medano is hiking. There are two nature trails for your hiking adventure: Montaña Roja and Montaña Pelada. These hills were formed from volcanic rocks that give a unique twisted and warped structure at both sides of the town.

Montaña Roja is 171m high and forms the nature reserve which protects the local dune ecosystem. There are two paths to hike at Montaña Roja; one leads to its summit and the other around the hill.

Montaña Pelada is a beautifully shaped crater from an ancient volcanic eruption and is now filled with seawater. Its hiking trail starts from the western sandy bay that is sheltered. It is the nudist sunbathers' favorite spot. The trail continues steeply to the rim of the crater where you can get great coastal views. You can follow this crater rim trail until it comes back to a wine farm called Parque Eólico.

Although it is a 3-hour return hike, you can enjoy the same trail on a mountain bike. This will make very good adventure on the trails which do not need much off-road experience.
