How much do swim suits have to do?

This year, in Beijing, a lot of world records were brought down. How much of those records have to do with the swimmers ability and how much with the technology applied to their swim suits?

The technology certainly doesn't hurt, but 20 world records were broken in swimming this year. More than the last 2 Olympics combined. Swimsuits are a large factor. Back in Mark Spitz time, those suits could be bought at a local store. Now, they have these optimized super suits.

Newer training regiments are being created to get people to get faster which is a big role. Also, the sport as a whole is moving forward and more competition.

It is much harder to win a gold now. Mark Spitz tried to make a comeback a long while ago. With the new technology, he beat his old records. He didn't even qualify for the Olympics with the technology. I'd say the sport moving forward is most of the progress timewise, but the technology isn't doing nothing either
