How can I attach a long board to my 2006 Honda Civic sedan?

I am about to puchase a surfboard (longboard style) from New Hampshire and will need a way to haul it back to Boston (suburb) and on trips to the beach. I dont have a roof rack but am looking into getting one. How could I attach it without a rack or what are some good racks and board holder systems for my 2006 Honda Civic sedan. I guess the Honda website doesnt make them for my car anymore. I'm not looking for anything too expensive and should I get a board bag? Thanks!

there are foam pads available at sporting goods stores that they market as kayak carrier kits. They come with straps that run through the car when the doors are open. I would definitely get a roof rack if you plan on using it at least once every few months.
