How to record my guitar/voice What do I need?
Hey everyone, I am starting to record all my music that I cover and my mic sucks. What do I need to be able to get a clear sound for my voice and guitar. I do not know if this matters but I have a LP Epiphone Standard plus, Line 6 Spider IV 75W and a FBV short-board MKII. I really do not know much about recording at all so please give me all of your input, because I would like good quality demos. Thanks!
I don't have an amplified or distortion paddle, I'm ignorant with them.
However, what I can suggest to you is Line 6 POD UX 1. It's an Audio interface that plugs into the computer through the USB Port. It comes with POD Farm (a virtual amplification software), or you can plug your own distortion paddle into it (my friend does that to his). If you think it's expensive, try looking for a used Toneport UX 1 by Line 6 (it's the same as POD UX1, just an older model - offers the same sound) but you get a better deal with POD UX 1 as you also get POD Farm (which is better than TP UX 1's Gearbox virtual amplification). Whether you get POD UX 1 + POD Farm or Toneport UX 1 + Gearbox, they both will come prepackaged with effects. Each is prepacked with a lot of amp-models, cab-models, and you can edit their settings.
With the POD UX 1 + Toneport UX 1, you can also record vocals and give them effects as well. I love the vocal's qualities.
I don't know what mic you use, but I've been using a Shure SM58 for years now. Shure's great for mics, most pros use the SM 58 (even if you can get a used one). But hey, maybe you might have a better one or an equivalent - this is not necessary.
Last, but not least, a competitive recording software (just stay away from Cakewalk Sonar). Some good ones are Cubase, Protools, Adobe Audition (this is the one I use). You can get basic versions for most of them if you plan to buy.
So yeah, that's as much as I could tell you. With UX 1s, all you have to do is plug your guitar into them or your mic (or both at once as it has a port for guitar & mic). Stay away from the GX models as they don't have mic ports, I'm not sure if they can even power a mic.
