Is Bali mainly for bogans?
When it comes to traveling nearly every bogan I've spoken to has talked about how Bali is a must see. From the cheap flights and awesome nightclubbing after sunset to sitting around drinking beer by the pool, eating chinese food and occasionally heading into to town to pick up a trolley load of pirated DVDs and cheap Billabong shirts.
Is that mainly what Bali is about? Is it basically just a mecca for Australian bogans?
And of course, the Corby family association doesn't help either.
I personally enjoyed my visit to Bali. What you do there is up to you.
You can be rude to the locals and employees, or you can treat them with respect and make friends with them (they are much more willing to sit and talk with you then the majority of employees in Australian businesses).
You can spend all your time nightclubbing, drinking beer and shopping or you can travel around the island. There are many beautiful natural features, waterfalls, volcanoes, white water rafting, bike riding (through rice paddies and villages), visit local villages (our driver took us to his little village, was amazing to see how the lived and he was one the wealthier ones). We also went past a ceremony site (they were preparing for a cremation ... the driver told us the smells were terrible). Then there are awesome surf spots. Temples, etc etc etc.
It really depends on what you want to get out of the trip. Sure you are going to meet some "bogan" Aussies who can't understand why the locals don't bow to their every command, or expect everything to be like it is in Australia. Ignore them ... enjoy yourself and make it an experience you want. The people are very friendly and look to accommodate your every desire.
Relaxing by the pool drinking beers is great!!! Great way to relax and enjoy your holiday ... there is nothing wrong with relaxing whilst on a holiday (just remember to be respectful).
I loved Bali, but wasn't big on the shopping. Would do perhaps a day of it. The markets out of town are better, and more personal. Next visit I am making sure I spend more time outside of the main centres ... experience the real Bali!
