The art of surfing is not something that was recently developed. It was there from ancient times. For the Hawaiian people surfing is not only entertaining but also spiritual. The making of the surf boards are no ordinary job. They perform rituals for making surf boards and the length of these boards usually vary from 10 to 16 feet.

People from the west when they came to Hawaii saw this art of surfing and they began to do it. It gained popularity very fast. Now it is not just in Hawaii, surfing is done in almost everywhere in the world where the tide is perfect. It was the Americans who cut short the length of the boards and made it 6 to 10 Ft. long. The material used for making surfboards was redwood. Surfing schools and surf camps were arranged to teach beginners the art of surfing. Surf camps taught amateur surfers how to maintain their boards and surf safely.

Next came hollow surfboards, it was made of redwood itself but it was hollow. This model of surfboards became very popular as it weighed less and improved the speed of the board. A South American wood called Balsa replaced redwood in the future years. It was found to be very lighter than redwood boards. This was a major breakthrough in surfboard design and the demand for balsa made surfboards increased rapidly. Short board became very common and wide spread.

The average length of a board became 6 foot. There was further reduction in weight. All these improved features made it possible for the surfers to make quick turns, show stunts, tricks and also attain more speed with enhanced balance. Even though a surfer is required to have balance, half of the balancing depends on the board. It should have a center of gravity, so that it should float no matter how it is placed in water. So the board has to be in perfect condition otherwise balancing will be very difficult. A surfer is only good as his board.
Most of the lessons will be taken along the coastal side of the beach in order to teach practical knowledge for the students.

Tips and tricks should be given clearly in order to safeguard themselves the dangerous situation. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or a well versed in this field, they should be given adequate training in their period of training.
